Eager to help care for abandoned pets and exotic creatures as an Animal Care professional in Guatemala? Opportunity Catalyst’s Animal Care program empowers job applicants to gain hands-on experience in animal care in Antigua. Placements include a cat and dog shelter, a veterinary clinic, and an exotic animal rehabilitation center that caters to crocodiles, snakes, lizards, and turtles. These animals have often been neglected, abandoned, or suffered injury or illness. Job applicants will assist with a range of tasks that support the animals’ recovery, health, and socialization through training and companionship.
What to Expect and How You’ll Make an Impact
In Latin America, animals are often not regarded as family members in the same way they are in Western societies. As a result, many animals suffer from neglect, abandonment, injury, or illness. By working in animal care in Antigua, you can contribute to the high demand for support in rehabilitating and improving their well-being.
As an Animal Care professional, you will assist at a dog and cat shelter, a veterinary clinic, or an exotic animal rehabilitation center. Specific placements depend on where your help is most needed, but you are welcome to indicate a preference.
Responsibilities may include:
- Cleaning cages
- Bathing and grooming animals
- Assisting with obedience training
- Supporting veterinary care
- Walking and playing with the animals to improve their socialization
- Small construction projects
- Conducting educational workshops
- Engaging in marketing and fundraising initiatives

Job Requirements
- A parent or guardian must accompany applicants under the age of 16.
- Applicants aged 16 or 17 at the start of the program must provide parental consent and may need to submit additional documents to the local team.
- All applicants aged 18+ must provide a criminal background check before departure. Those aged 16 and 17 must submit two character reference letters.
- All applicants must have adequate travel insurance.
- All applicants must be fluent in English.
